Movie Monday: Some great scary movies and a big disappointment

I must have been missing something because it seems that everyone was loving the movie Sinners. It made around $279 million in the United States and Canada and a worldwide total of approximately $367 million. It’s even returning to some IMAX theaters for Halloween.
I popped some popcorn on Saturday night and settled in prepared to stream an epic horror movie. Then I shut if off about halfway through. Hailey Steinfeld had become a vampire. The one twin brother had busted out of the closet and was a vampire. The bouncer was now a vampire. And I was done.
Maybe I just don’t like vampire movies because I also equally hated Nosferatu (2025) but we had gone to the movie theater so I was hoping staying till the end would make the ticket price worth it. It wasn’t.
As a big scary movie fan, I found Sinners anything but scary. The dialogue was boring. The music and dancing were fine for a musical, I guess. But it all seemed like a scary movie spoof and I didn’t think that’s what I was supposed to be feeling. But whatever it was, it sure wasn’t dread or suspense or edge-of-my-seat anything. I just wanted it to be over. So I quit.
So what was I missing that everyone else loved so much?
Was it just because I had come off of three REALLY good scary movies recently so my expectations were just too high? Or was Sinners just not good?
On the flip side, if you’re looking for some of my recommendations for scary movie fans:
Heretic (2024), Talk To Me (2022), and Bring Her Back (2025) are well worth a watch!
Those three were great! And it’s going to be a long time coming before I find a recent scary movie I like better than Talk To Me. In fact, I’ve moved that into my Top 10 list. It had a great plot, a great wrap-up ending that made sense, the acting was superb, and I loved it. Although, I missed a few scenes because I had to turn my head. It was intense. But sooooo good!
Bring Her Back was recently ranked as the scariest movie of the year and I did enjoy it. Ironically, it has the same director brothers at the helm as Talk To Me so no wonder it was a good one.
And like I wrote about before- I enjoy sinister Hugh Grant more than Rom-Com Hugh Grant so Heretic was worth the watch!
Next up, Weapons. I just hope it lives up to the hype for me because Sinners sure didn’t.

Movie Review: Roofman
I’m going to start out by saying that I love Channing Tatum, so I’m completely biased. COMPLETELY. That being said, aside from my admiration, he is a really good actor. And don’t scoff at that…. he is! He has range. He can ham it up in slapstick comedy movies like 21 Jump Street (2012), dance […]
