Movie Monday: Some Scary Movie Reviews

I spent the weekend blowing my nose, eating soup, drinking Throat Coat tea, and watching scary movies!

I came across a couple of them that I had never heard of before and I think they’re worth a watch. Are either of them going into my BEST SCARY MOVIES OF ALL TIME category? No. But if you’re in the mood for a good old-fashioned slumber party jump scare movie or a twisty psychological thriller with some gore- these two have you covered.

Up first: THE WARD (2010)
Starring Amber Heard & Mamie Gummer
Directed by John Carpenter

John Carpenter probably rings a bell because he also directed Halloween, The Thing, The Fog, Christine…. the list goes on and on. He’s no stranger to scary movies.

Mamie Gummer is Meryl Streep’s daughter and she’s been in quite a few movies. Amber Heard will now always be infamously linked with Johnny Depp (which is unfortunate because she was great in this movie). I also watched their entire dual defamation trial and my verdict would have been vastly different than what their jury came up with. But all that aside…

If you’re into ghostly spookiness- this movie has quite a creepy villain. If you enjoy a good psych ward movie where you never really know who to trust until the end- this movie will check that box, too. It’s set in the 1960’s so their hair and attire is great! It reminded me of one I would have loved to rent for a slumber party back in the day.

The other movie I watched this past weekend: TRUE FICTION (2019)
I didn’t recognize any of these actors (which is sometimes kinda better because you can watch it with nothing to compare it to).

This gave off a little bit of Misery and The Shining vibes and had me guessing who to trust up until the very end. While I thought it was decent, my husband wasn’t a fan. He said it was a little too confusing for him. I thought it had just the right amount of gore to make it uneasy but all the right who-do-you-trust twistiness to make it intriguing. I don’t want to ruin anything for you by revealing anything else. You’ll have to see for yourself.
